3 Steps to "Go Green" and Rejuvenate Your New Year's Resolution

As the glory of summer is upon us we may have forgotten those hopeful resolutions we made 4 months ago. During those bleak winter months, anything seemed possible with a little effort but as summer approaches, effort goes out the window and we trade our high hopes for lazy days spent at the beach. If you resolved to “go green” this year, here are three easy steps to ensure your resolve isn’t left out at sea.

1.) Reduce Your Energy Use. The hottest things in your home are the ones that use the most energy – your hot water heater, oven, washer/dryer and car all spring to mind. Think about how much hot water you use: for laundry, dishwashing and cooking, bathing and cleaning. Simple things like using cold water instead of hot for laundry, investing in a faucet or showerhead that uses multiple streams of water that more efficiently spreads out the water and only running the dishwasher when it is full to capacity can easily save water and energy. Additionally, placing your water heater proximally close to its biggest jobs like the laundry room or bathroom will save.

2.) Reuse. Reuse your own cloth bags at the grocery store. Oftentimes a store will give you a minor discount for doing so and you’ll save those plastic bags from the landfills or from building up at home. For some added flare, you can even use some of those out of style purses and beach totes that have been taking up space in your closet; throw them in the trunk so you will never have to use a plastic bag again.

3.) Recycle. Check the recycling standards in your area and make sure you are placing everything you can in your recycling bin. Most plastic items are imprinted with a single digit number on the bottom or side of the package. Some areas will recycle every type of plastic while others only recycle 1’s and 2’s. Make sure you are taking full advantage.

Hopefully, with the year a fourth of the way in, this will provide you some inspiration to rejuvenate your old New Year’s Resolutions. It doesn’t have to be a painful, “all or nothing” process to go green, lose weight or live better. A few simple steps can change your life if you commit and make the effort.
