Earth Day is This Weekend

Earth Day is Friday April 22. This 40 year tradition is typically celebrated by planting a tree and participating in other “green” activities. However, if you don’t have the time or space to plant a full scale tree in your yard, here are some other tips and tricks to celebrate Earth Day and maybe even save you some dough along the way.

1. Spring Clean. Use Earth Day as a motivator to finish your spring cleaning. Take care to use eco-friendly cleaners and environmentally friendly practices for tasks like laundry, cleaning drains and disposing of electronics. Donate what you don’t need or no longer want to help those in need and keep your old stuff out of landfills.

2. Educate Yourself. Take a few hours out of the day to research going green, green economics and green legislation. The more you know, the more active you can be both from day to day and at the ballot box.

3. Make a pledge. Earthday.org is inviting visitors to post a pledge on their site in hopes of getting a billion pledges to proactively protect the environment. If posting isn’t your thing, make a pledge to yourself and the environment, write it down and tape it to the mirror or somewhere you will see it every day. Goals are more easily accomplished when they are in front of us all the time.

4. Drive Less. Try to not use your car for an entire day. Bike, carpool or take public transit to work and try to walk or bike to do your errands. This lifestyle probably isn’t realistic for every day, but you might be inspired to get more exercise, spend more time outdoors and cut down your carbon footprint.

These things may seem small, but in the long run they can really pay off. Imagine if everyone did just one of these things on Earth Day. Huge changes can be made when many people make small ones. You might even inspirate others around you. Perhaps your commitment to saving the earth will start a trend and soon your whole social circle will start greening their lives too. That would make a ton of difference!
